October 25 dawned cloudy and threatening rain. It had rained a few tenths of an inch overnight and 'crossers were hoping for more. Nature delivered in modest am
ounts at first and then more (but only the tear-down crew really enjoyed the all-natural douche). The SLO Bike Coalition was on hand with a
pancake breakfast, and Central Coast Brewing brought their Tactical Thirst Response Unit for support. The beer flowed like, well beer, and a real Belgian flavor permeated the event. Katrina Baumsteiger, four-time World Masters Cyclocross medalist said, “ I loved the course! But loved more to see my niece and nephew on their new cross bikes tearing it up around the Circle of Doom!! What rain???

The race was held at the first-time venue of El Chorro Regional County Park midway between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. San Luis Obispo County Parks Department has hosted many adventure and Scott Tinley races, so they were ready for their first 'cross event. The course was
a
true Euro- style route, with many technical turns and complex riding problems. It included about 70% dirt, a 35 yard sand it, a greasy run-up and a 1/3 mile section of pavement for recovery. The course made true selections as riders finished by ones and two - the technical factors made bike handling a real plus. Ty
ler Wertenbruch, who raced at the Provincetown, Rhode Island UCI event two weeks ago said,
“The ra
ce turned out better than I had ever hoped for a first year event. Putting it in was an absolute blast and racing it
was that much more satisfying. Can't wait to have everyone up for our race on November 14 in Cambria.” Visit www.slocross.com for more information on our 11/14 event in Cambria.
